ISTRIAN
Region
ISTRIA
– PEARL OF THE ADRIATIC
Istria
is the biggest peninsula in the Adriatic Sea. The
peninsula is located at the head of the Adriatic between
the Gulf of Trieste and the Bay of Kvarner.
Important
towns in Istria include Pula (Pola), Porec (Parenzo),
Rovinj (Rovigno), Pazin (Pisino), Labin (Albona),
Motovun (Montona), Buzet (Pinguente) and Buje (Buie), as
well as smaller towns of Višnjan (Visignano), Roc (Rozzo),
and Hum (Colmo).
A small slice in the north, including
the coastal towns of Piran (Pirano), Portorož (Portorose)
and Koper (Capodistria), and a tiny region encompassing
the town of Muggia (Slovenian Milje) belongs to Italy.

The
larger geographical features of Istria include the Ucka
(Monte Maggiore) mountain in the east, the rivers
Dragonja, Mirna, Pazincica and Raša, and the Lim bay.
Famous
people like Dante, Jules Verne, James Joyce and Robert
Koch worked, wrote, visited or were simply inspired by
'Terra Magica'.
The
Magical Land!
|
|

It
represents the geographical junction between the
Mediterranean area and southern Central Europe.
|

With its
forest-covered Ucka Mountains (elevation 1396 meters),
its hills, valleys, and small cities, this varied
landscape is beyond compare.
|
|

Standing
side-by-side, the Roman amphitheater and Arch of Triumph
exist in perfect unison with basilica and lovely frescos of the Middle Ages.
Quaint stone villages exist
harmoniously amidst modern tourist centers whose broad
palette of leisure-time activities and attractions will
please the most discriminating visitor.
|

The
Istrian coast affords the visitor a diverse and
multifaceted choice of pleasures: easy to reach coves,
picturesque islands, and, of course, pristine water.
Whether a romantic, craggy, rocky coast or a quiet beach
of fine white stones, there is something to please
everyone.
The
temperate water, which varies from 23 to 27 degrees
celsius in the summer months, makes swimming very
pleasant from May until the end of September.
